Lutherans Work to Build
Shelters in Anticipation of Haiti's Rainy Season
With the rainy season expected to
begin at the end of March, it is critical that the people of Haiti
have some shelter to help preserve health, sanitation and dignity,
according to a Feb. 17 report from a Lutheran World Relief (LWR)
assessment team in Haiti. To help "beat the clock," Lutherans are
working quickly to set up shelters for Haitians displaced from their
homes since the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Response
1-29-2010
An Update on Vulnerable Haitians from LIRS
Like you, Lutheran Immigration and
Refugee Service (LIRS) is deeply concerned about the situation in
Haiti following the Jan. 12 earthquake. Our hearts go out to the
people of Haiti and the approximately 1 million Haitians living in
the United States and elsewhere who are coping with the devastation
and the loss of loved ones.
LIRS's service expertise has
allowed us to call for temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitians
residing in the United States and recommend ways to meet the needs
of Haiti's separated or unaccompanied children. Our networks are
identifying Haitian children in federal custody who may now be
eligible for TPS or release, as well as identifying needs and
resources for outreach to the Haitian community.
Check LIRS's Haiti
response page for
updates on these and other ongoing activities.
Thank you
for your thoughts, prayers and acts of welcome to support the people
of Haiti.
