Every year, Lutheran Services in Iowa, with a grant from ELCA World Hunger, sponsors this day of education and advocacy.
Once again Lutherans from all over Iowa joined together to advocate for families and children in Iowa at the State Capitol.
Northeastern Iowa Synod members boarded the bus in Waverly and Nazareth Lutheran in Cedar Falls early Wednesday morning and first gathered at Capitol Hill Lutheran in Des Moines.
For our opening devotion, Bishop Ullestad reminded us that “being an advocate for the poor is woven into being a follower of Christ.”
He showed video of five 5th grade boys who, when they discovered a special needs classmate was being bullied decided to befriend and protect him.
“Today you are those five boys”, Bishop Ullestad.
“Today God will use your voices. Today we are doing God’s work.”

The keynote speaker was Ken Jones, Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Grandview University. He spoke of the role of grace and works in Luther’s teaching. We do what we do on behalf of the poor because of the transformative work of God in us.

Then it was time to take to the hill and speak to our representatives.
