When severe flooding affected most of the Northeastern Iowa Synod last fall, our neighbors in the Western Iowa Synod were quick to respond with donations flood buckets which had already been assembled.
The lesson of being prepared was not lost.
Now the Northeastern Iowa Synod wants to be ready for the next flood with flood buckets that can be quickly distributed and ready for immediate use.
Flood buckets contain essential cleaning supplies that can help families and communities affected by flooding, tornadoes or other disasters. Usually, by the time flooding has occurred, these items are in short supply and families affected don’t have the time or means to shop for cleaning supplies. Having fully assembled buckets available make the overwhelming job of clean up after a disaster just a little bit easier.
This year the Northeastern Iowa Synod is inviting congregations attending the Synod Assembly to bring a prepared flood bucket clean up kit to share.
The buckets collected at Assembly will be divided into three groups and stored at locations in Mason City, Decorah, and Waverly — three areas prone to flooding.
The goal is to collect at least 150 buckets at Assembly so that 50 buckets or more can be on hand in each of the designated communities for quick distribution to families.
“When a flood comes anywhere near these communities, our goal is to get the buckets to a local church to distribute to help families respond to the disaster,” says Pastor Mark Anderson, Assistant to the Bishop.
The buckets can be brought to the Center for Faith and Life registration area on the Luther College campus where they will be displayed throughout Assembly.
