Hear My Voice: A Prison Prayer Book

July 18, 2019 by NEIA Synod

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Augsburg Fortress have collaborated to develop a new prayer book as part of the implementing resolutions of the ELCA Social Statement, The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries.

Hear My Voice: A Prison Prayer Book is a book of reflection, Bible study, and prayer for those in jails, prisons, detention centers and halfway houses; those facing arrest and sentencing; and those serving time, as well as families and friends of those who are incarcerated.

The team of writers includes currently and formerly incarcerated persons and those involved in various prison and re-entry ministries.

You can read more about the prayer book here. The book is available at Augsburg Fortress. Local congregations may want to purchase the prayer book and get it into the hands of prisoners, either directly or via prison chaplains.

Augsburg Fortress also has a downloadable resource for suggestions when it comes to distributing and using Hear My Voice.  Getting this book to those “on the inside” can be challenging; each correctional facility or center, jail or detention center has different rules and policies on the use and distribution of printed material.

Policies regarding distributing publications vary from facility to facility.  You must check with the specific institution for their policies.

Below is a list of correctional facilities in the counties in the Northeastern Iowa Synod.
